Somehow, it’s hard to say the things
I really want to say—
The words may not be fancy but they’re true
And, by the way,
The year of eighteen-sixty was
The best I ever had,
For that’s the lucky one for me
That gave me my Granddad!
The times we’ve talked and walked and laughed
Are the ones I’ll not forget;
We’ve shared a lot of living
But there’s one thing I regret—
My seventeen seems so few years…
I wish I might have had
The fun of living eighty-six
Along with my Granddad!
And now, tonight I’m mighty proud
To hand this honored pin
Of worthy Masonry his life
Is represented in—
And me?…In fifty years or more
May I deserve as well
A pin of honor like this one
On my Granddad’s lapel!
