LABOR….GOOD FOR THE SOUL

What would we do without work…..I know, I know, lots….but in fact, we would die of hunger, if not sheer boredom.  Remember when summer vacation started and you were out of school?  Wasn’t that the greatest feeling in the world, to have the whole summer ahead with a blank slate. That does go well for a while, and gnawing boredom sets in.  At first it is barely felt, but then, it grows a little more each day.  Suddenly ‘sleeping in’ runs out about 10AM, give or take….Eating is nice if someone has worked to get some food for you. Getting dressed comes next…if someone has worked to get some clothes for you….Using the cell phone, computer, TV, IPad, IPod, etc. is available….which again…is just fine if it is there, (like) someone has worked to get those for you. And on it goes…can’t go out to eat, can’t drive, can’t use a bike.  Wait a minute!!! Don’t have a bed, blankets, stove, cups, house, garage, and all listed above…..unless…..someone else has worked to provide it for you.

Working gives us self esteem, hope, accomplishment, pride, and money to purchase the things we need.  We begin our working life by putting away toys that someone else has purchased….in a bedroom that is comfortable, because someone has…etc.  We help with food preparation, keep the garden free of weeds, and mow the yard whenever necessary.  Sometimes these chores are ‘without’ monetary pay…..because our pay comes from the rewards of working together in our home, so that adults can work, and we can share in the reward…Seems like a big circle, doesn’t it!

Working is truly good for the soul….it gives us life and purpose and a reason to learn, accomplish, and achieve goals. It feels good to purchase your first car, to decorate your first apartment, and the pride that goes along with it, is truly amazing.

So whether it is plowing or purchasing, digging or darning, selling or sailing, raising or razing, work is good. We learn not to be ‘lumps’ (someone has to take care of.)…Incidentally being a ‘lump’ only lasts so long…After a lump becomes an adult, and does not work because HE/SHE DOESN’T WANT TO…then he will find himself with other lumps.  Those lumps will go on to find ‘lumping’ is not too acceptable with the established majority of worker bees, and life as he remembered it ,in 2nd grade, when those with a work ethic ‘worked’ to make his life pleasant, will fade into oblivion.

Yes, it is a big circle…..and you need to decide which circle you want to be in…..jump in the moving walkway of life and enjoy work….Pass on the good ethics and morals that work entails… oh yes,and keep the walkway running smoothly, for other workers….someone has to!

FUNNIES………CAN’T HELP IT!!!!!

Most of the time my blogs have some kind of subject…Not today. Our local weekly paper has a ‘funnies page’…For those of you not old enough….the cartoons in the newspapers used to be called ‘the funnies’. Hence, we always read the ‘funny papers’ in the Sunday edition when they were the largest.

Here are a list of one-liners that show American humor….hope you enjoy.

1. One tequila, two tequila, three tequila…..floor.

2. If man evolved from monkeys and apes, why do we still have monkeys and apes?

3. If someone with multiple personalities threatens to kill himself, is it considered a hostage situation?

4. Would a fly without wings be called a walk?

5. If a parsley farmer is sued, can they garnish is wages?

6. What was the best thing before sliced bread?

7. Where do forest rangers go to ‘get away from it all’?

8. If a turtle doesn’t have a shell, is he homeless or naked?

9. Can an atheist get insurance against acts of God?

10. Why do shops have signs ‘guide dogs only’. the dogs can’t read and their owners are blind!

Hope this tickles your funny bone…………later

Oh ….B.B. THORNTON!!!!

You were made for Fargo BB…it took a while for me to see how the characters were going to interact, but it is a great series. How you wind yourself thru these ordinary lives is something else. Well, almost ordinary….on the outside

I guess it is true, if you love Justified, you’ll be happy to be in your seat for Fargo…..FX 10PM on Tues. Be there or be square…..nothing like a snowy night, a few bodies, some idiots, and a little gore….to keep me going. Thanks FX

ACORN HARVESTING, SOUTH FLORIDA STYLE

South Florida should have an Acorn Festival….there are more acorns in my yard than the 6 squirrels living here can handle. They aren’t even hiding them…not even from one another for fun. They let them lie, they let them pile up. I think they need to stay in the higher branches of the oak trees or they will be pummeled. This year there are more acorns than even the old timers can remember. They bang on the tin roofs, they bang on the metal tops of the cars, they hit the as he works on his morning hit of cat nip, and they cover each and every inch of this yard.

There seems to be no reason for this gift from mother nature….and no end to gift giving! Maybe she forgot and waved her magic wand one too many times over our town, maybe too many squirrels called to say there were no acorns last year! All I know is that there is a possible oak forest coming here and I’m not prepared.

We raked a portion of the yard and filled our trash buckets for
‘green’ to overflowing….Remember now that acorns are not ‘leaf light’ and are not easy to rake, or to get out of the slits between the patio boards.

The acorns just lay there…..and sprout, oh yes, they are sprouting! Remember all my wonderful happy garden stores about saving seeds and cleaning the earth…..I ain’t sav’in these seeds and I’m aching all over from ‘cleaning the earth’ today.

South Florida also offers up another surprise with its oak trees….they don’t lose their leaves until Jan/Feb and they take forever to drop…..and, on top of that, there are little fuzzy flowers that come after that……to make more acorns, of course!

I know you are feeling sorry for me, as 12″ of snow fall in Minneapolis, or Spokane. I can see the tears from those of you in Buffalo. But please, have a heart and understand that these little devils are now laying in places I cannot reach…..and their sprouts are sprouting as we speak…..Ever read Jack and the Beanstalk…..?

On the road again……and I’ll be writing about all the things swirling around in my small brain. I know I should be doing this at night….when the thoughts are free and the past is present, but I’ve been on the road and away from a ‘writing machine’…..sure do miss those typewriters….I could really go fast on those babies, and the keys of the Selectric, were just in the right spot.  Oh Well…

Been visiting wonderful friends, wonderful family, wonderful old towns that are well known in my heart. Have welcomed back memories of our family home, the high school I graduated from 50 years ago this year…..and wonderful country auctions, full of lifetimes treasures, awaiting new homes..

The corn is truly ‘higher than an elephant’s eye’ but the yards are crisp from lack of rain.  Hostas outline beautiful neighborhood homes and the Dairy Queen is packed kids.  Little League is in full swing, and the lights glow until at least 10 each evening.

The swimming pool is busy and the park is full of picnics and teens ‘polishing their cars’ under the shade of the oak, maple, and walnut.

Golfers tee off early….really really early……cause 9 holes before they get to work is just a wonderful way to start the day.

Joggers are jogging…..walkers are walking, and gentle hands covered with garden gloves tend the faded blooms of roses and petunias.

Vacation Bible School is commencing…..swimming lessons are in full swing….tennis, and basketball courts are full of one or ten.

Yes, I’m ‘on the road again’ and it is a refreshing journey to the present and of the past.

SUM-SUM-SUMMERTIME…… WHEN I WAS A KID

I remember……(and that’s saying a lot sometime), how it was to be a kid on Outer Drive South in the summertime……It was outstanding……but, I’m sure, not by today’s kid rating.   We played….I mean really played.  We played outdoors…..in the yard, under the magnificent shade of maple trees. We day dreamed with the clouds..as they displayed magical formations, that, in turn, gave us magical ideas. We played in sandboxes, using spatulas, sifters, rocks, wood, and whenever, Tonka.  We had peanut butter sandwiches, a banana, and milk for lunch before heading for the summer afternoon…..or the ever favorite, grilled cheese and an apple..

There was always the sprinkler to keep us cool, and then we would all lay in the grass, looking for a 4 leaf clover, as the sun cooked the landscape. We played hopscotch, using rocks for chalk, and when it got to be close to suppertime, we’d sit on the front step and wait for our daddy to come home

We didn’t know about air conditioning…..well, we did, but it was called….a fan.  Our grandparents had ‘summer kitchens’ to keep the house cool, and we had summer porches, screened in rooms where we slept when going for a visit.

There was always the ice cream man and we could set our watches by him…..money was not in abundance, so it was truly a treat when we got change from the house to get something.

There was a field in the back of our house, even tho we lived in town.  One year it was corn, and the next beans, then maybe it was weeds for a year or two…..It was our ‘extended’ playground….close to home for safety and yet a place to run races, and hide between the stalks.

There were girls and boys, but not girlfriends and boyfriends…..C’mon, this was in the 50’s when kids actually acted like kids.  TV’s were what the ‘rich people’ had…..and Mickey Mouse was just beginning his club of followers.

When the sun went down, it was time for ‘kick the can’….only to be played at night…..and did we play. We had at least 3 houses each way, plus the ‘field’.  The ‘gas thing’ out in the front yard next door was ‘home’ and 10 kids disappeared and reappeared, running in for ‘free’, as the lightning bugs covered the fields of hazy central Indiana.

When mother range the bell, it was the close of the day……we would scamper from wherever and whatever we were doing…..cause the bell always ment ‘come and come NOW’.

Oh, summer days are still beautious, and the lightning bugs still hover the cornfields, but the memories of being a kid in the 50’s, can hardly be duplicated…..It was so, so very special.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL….GO FOR IT!

Find one in your neighborhood…send your kids….time for you, time for them…new friends, new ideas, refreshed belief, smiles, God, Mother Nature, love… do it!-+

WHEN IS A KITCHEN, NOT A KITCHEN?

Most would say it is when you aren’t cook’in…..or better yet, you don’t even cook.  But not here at my house.   A kitchen used to be there, but now it is gone…no sink. no frig, no microwave, no cabinets, no faucet, no nothing.  I kind of like it….makes me long for the restaurants just down the street.

However, I really didn’t go this drastic just to eat out….(I think, not sure) But anyhow, we are redoing the kitchen…..and it will take about a month total. It’s been a long time com’in, and now it is actually happening.  I guess I’m here to say that it is fun……and the reason is……we don’t live there.  We IS  down the street in another home, WITH a kitchen.   That does take away the pain and agony of trying to figure out if the electricity and/or water are on, and most importantly, does the john flush and can I make a cup of coffee!  Those, my friends, are the major points of having a happy life…..toilet, toilet paper, coffee, cream/sugar, and the AM  Wall Street Journal.  There is no reason to continue further into the day if those aren’t around.

So rule #1….when doing extensive house renovation (and that includes anything that might disrupt the above….and include any dust), it is better to move away and let others take control of the mess.

The stuff is gone now, the dumpster was picked up….now the beam has been installed, and dry wall is being applied to ceilings as we speak.  There are can lights going in and more plug-ins than are in a usual two-story home. Hubby wants plenty of plug-ins.  (He loves to do the cooking since his retirement, therefore, it is only natural he design where he likes to cook)  (He really did do a good job, except for some hanging lights he picked out….those were BAD)

So entering into the third week….things are going fine….(I don’t want to know if they aren’t)  Kitty cat is happy in new digs…..and in our house, if the kitty is happy, everyone is happy.   More later.
